GEM stands for Global Education & Mobility. The GEM portal is where NTU students browse overseas partner universities, see the exchange options open to their programme, and apply to study abroad as part of their degree.
What is GEM Exchange?
The GEM portal lists NTU's overseas partner universities and the exchange options available to your programme. You browse destinations, see what each partner offers, and submit your exchange application through it.

GEM Explorer vs GEM Discoverer
GEM exchange comes in two main types, and you apply for both through the GEM portal.
- GEM Explorer: a full semester at an overseas partner university. You pay NTU's school fees instead of the host university's, and can clear a semester's worth of AUs during your exchange.
- GEM Discoverer: short-term overseas programmes such as summer and winter schools. You pay the host university's additional costs, and can clear only 1-2 modules' worth of Broadening and Deepening Electives (BDEs) during your exchange.

When you go on exchange, the courses you take overseas need to map to NTU courses so they count toward graduation. In the portal you can see the past approved courses your seniors have mapped, so you know which courses have been accepted before.
